Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

How do I know if I need therapy?

Sometimes life’s challenges can become overwhelming. We can feel stuck and unable to move forward, are unhappy in our relationships or lack of relationships and sometimes the physical symptoms of anxiety or depression become very painful and debilitating. These are just some of the reasons people seek psychotherapy. Even though advice from friends can be useful and sometimes just talking to them can provide relief, there are long lasting benefits from the therapeutic process. Therapy gives you the tools you need to develop insight into troubling behavior patterns and options to redirect them so that you can overcome whatever challenges are ahead of you.

How can therapy help?

Deepen your understanding of your self
Develop new coping mechanisms
Learn skills to improve your relationships
Identify and change old behavior patterns
Improve self–esteem
Make better choices and avoid self –defeating behaviors
Manage emotional pressures and stressful situations
On-going support from someone who is committed to helping you achieve your full potential

How long does therapy take?

There is really no formula for this. The length of time and frequency of sessions depends upon the depth and intensity of the experience. Support for a current life crisis can become a short-term process. The pursuit of continuing self-growth or the uncovering of deep seated issues with their roots in the past involves a psychodynamic or psychoanalytic approach which requires a longer term commitment.

How do I choose the right therapist for me?

Trust your instincts. It is an important decision. Some people like to meet with more than one person and compare experiences. Others will start with one consultation and take it from there. You can start by meeting with me for an initial appointment. We will spend the first session talking about your concerns and getting to know each other. Sometimes it feels like a good fit from the beginning and other times it takes a few sessions to determine whether or not this is the right path for you.
